Plymouth is set to host the second round of the 2011 America's Cup World Series between 10 - 18 September 2011.
The World Series is the qualifying event for the America's Cup, one of the most significant events on the global sporting calendar and by far the most coveted prize in sailing.
Not since 1951 has there been any racing in British waters that has led to the America's Cup.
The World Series consists of up to 12 regattas at venues in Europe and the United States leading to the Louis Vuitton Cup for the selection of the challenger to the defender, Oracle Racing, in San Francisco.
Vivien Pengelly, leader of Plymouth City Council said: "We are thrilled that Plymouth has been selected to be a host city for the America's Cup World Series.
"It will be a real opportunity for Plymouth to show off its assets to the world and it will support our ambitions to further develop our visitor and marine sectors."
Richard Worth, chairman of the America's Cup Event Authority said: "Similar to San Francisco, Plymouth Sound is a natural stadium that will bring the racing to the spectators and really showcase the yachts in a spectacular way.
